Jackson Pollock

Hello everyone in the world!

We learned about Jackson Pollock. He made art with paint. He drizzled and splattered the paint on the canvas. We think his art is interesting and beautiful. We got to paint just like Jackson Pollock.

Meet Pumpky!

We read "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" by Linda Williams and acted out the story. In the story the little old lady comes across two big shoes, a pair of pants, a shirt, a hat, two gloves and a scary pumpkin head while walking in the woods. The little old lady tells these things that she is not afraid of them. This makes the items sad, so they come up with a plan! The next day the items are in the little old lady's garden in the form of a scarecrow...scaring all the crows away! What a great story. Here is our scarecrow - Pumpky!

Classroom Parties and Treat Schedule

This year we will be celebrating several occasions and holidays with classroom parties. Both Kindergarten classes share the treats that are brought in and we plan fun activities together. This year there will be parties to celebrate the following occasions: Halloween, Winter Break, Valentine's Day and a Year End party. I have taken the liberty of signing each family up to bring something to one of the parties. Please refer to the page at the top of this blog labelled Classroom Party & Treat Schedule to see what you are signed up for. Please let me know if there are any problems. Remember, please make sure all goodies are nut and peanut free. Thanks!

Kindergarten Room 1 Beliefs

We worked as a class for the month of September on what we believe a good citizen should look like, sound like and act like. We talked about what bucket fillers do and what bucket dippers do. These are the belief statements that we came up with that will help us to be good citizens in our classroom, in our school and in our community.

Nature Alphabet

This is our nature alphabet.

We collected natural items from our school grounds to create these letters.

Bakery

The children in room 1 have been showing an interest in the recipe books that we have in the dramatic play centre.  They have been cooking and baking during their free play time. After a class discussion, we decided to change our drama centre into a bakery! We began this process by creating a web of things that we think we need for our bakery. We can't wait to start baking!!!

Emily Carr

In Room 1 we have been noticing changes in the trees. Leaves are changing colour and falling to the ground.  We decided to study an artist who often painted trees. Her name is Emily Carr. We viewed some of her paintings, talked about the colours and lines we noticed and then painted our own trees. We also learned there are different kinds of trees. Here are some of the things the kinders know about trees:
Haley - "The needle ones and the big bushy tree."
Ava - "The leaves are changing colours."
Phoenix - "The leaves turn brown."
Miguel - "The leaves turn red and green and yellow."
Kara - "The pokey trees have green needles all year".
Kaycie - "Leaves fall off the trees and they change to purple sometimes."
Eunice - "The leaves are turning pink and orange.

International Dot Day

We celebrated International Dot Day today. Dot Day is inspired by the story "The Dot" by Peter H Reynolds. People all around the world are encouraged to embrace their creativity just like Vashti did in the book. In Kindergarten I often hear "I can't", but we are working toward "I'll try" instead!

Long time…no blogging!

Well, it has been awhile since we have blogged here in Room 1. It seems that we are so busy learning that we just do not get around to it. This month we have been busy talking about the winter season and reading books about snowmen and arctic animals. In math we are making complex patterns and we are practicing our subitizing (which is instantly recognizing dot arrangements). We have begun small group language and literacy work which supports us in our journey to become readers. And…we have 3 iPads in our classroom that we have been using in our guided discovery centres. Finally, we are looking forward to warmer weather so that we can finally get outside for recess!
